20's Plenty for York
20's Plenty for York is a coordinating campaign group based on the national campaign 20's Plenty for Us
We seek a 20 mph default speed limit on residential streets throughout York. This does not involve road humps, but changes in Traffic Regulation Orders and 20mph signs.
Area wide would cost around £350,000.
20's plenty is supported by the Green Party, who have a petitioned successfully for some Fishergate streets and South Bank. Email Cllr Andy D'Agorne. Cath Heinemeyer has successfully petitioned for the Hollybank Rd Area of Holgate, supported by her Councillors to go 20mph.
The Labour Group support 20's plenty, where residents request it and have set up a petition. Email Cllr Ruth Potter
§ In Britain more than half of road deaths & injuries occur on roads with 30 mph limits. Lowering speed limits to 20 mph decreases child pedestrian accidents by up to 70%. It also reduces emissions, encourages walking and cycling and makes for safer, pleasanter neighbourhoods.
§ Blanket 20 mph limits can be implemented without physical traffic calming measures.
§ They are very cost effective – the scheme for the whole of Portsmouth (a similar size to York) cost the equivalent of two junctions with traffic lights!
§ UK Councils covering nearly 3 million residents already have plans to implement ‘total 20’ limits.
